The use of fine portions from construction and demolition waste for expansive soil stabilization: A review

Mgboawaji Claude UJILE; Samuel Jonah ABBEY

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 7,   Pages 803-816 doi: 10.1007/s11709-022-0835-z

Abstract: Construction and demolition waste (CDW) are the largest waste products in the world today and competes as a viable recycled additive material in place of natural aggregates. Due to the increase in compressive strength of different mix proportions of CDW, it is also considered for reuse in concrete and subbase construction. This study shows the effect of CDW in expansive soil stabilization. The chemical and mechanical properties of these materials have shown that they are capable of developing compressive strength properties for replacement of cement with significant reduction in carbon emission. The inherent compositional properties of recycled CDW compared in this review suggests that CDW have good filler properties in highly expansive soils. Mixtures of crushed brick and recycled aggregates characterised based on chemical properties of different replacement ratios suggests that CDW of good-quality aggregates reduces swell potential of expansive soils and increased mechanical strength in pavement construction.

Long-term trends of fine particulate matter and chemical composition in the Pearl River Delta Economic

Xuemei WANG,Weihua CHEN,Duohong CHEN,Zhiyong WU,Qi Fan

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 1,   Pages 53-62 doi: 10.1007/s11783-014-0728-z

Abstract: Understanding the trends in PM levels is essential for formulating clean air plans. This paper analyzes PM data from various published sources for the years 2000 to 2010 in the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone (PRDEZ). The long-term variation in PM mass concentration is analyzed. Results show that PM , organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and show a similar trend, increasing before 2005 and then decreasing slightly. The annual average PM concentration ranges from 49.1 μg·m in 2000 to 64.3 μg·m in 2010, with a peak of 84.1 μg·m in 2004. None of these 11 years meets the new National Ambient Air Quality standard (NAAQS) for PM (35 μg·m ). Overall average concentrations of OC, EC, and are 13.0, 6.5, and 11.8 μg·m , respectively. and respectively have concentrations of 1.5 μg·m and 2.9 μg·m in 2000 and 6.4 μg·m and 5.3 μg·m in 2010, with a statistically significant average annual trend of+ 0.2 μg·m ·yr and+ 0.1 μg·m ·yr . In certain geographic regions, OC and EC contribute most of the PM , while in other regions secondary water-soluble ions are more important. In general, OC and are the dominant components of PM , contributing 20.6% and 18.6%, respectively. These results provide, for the first time, a better understanding of the long-term PM characteristics and trends, on a species-by-species basis, in the PRDEZ. The results indicate that PM abatement needs to prioritize secondary species.

Effect of fine solid particles on absorption rate of gaseous CO

LU Sumin, MA Youguang, SHEN Shuhua, ZHU Chunying

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2008, Volume 2, Issue 4,   Pages 368-372 doi: 10.1007/s11705-008-0067-3

Abstract: The influence of the properties of solid particles in slurry on the absorption of CO in the slurry was investigated in a stirred thermostatic reactor. The absorption experiments were carried out in three different slurries consisting of water, cyclohexane and soybean oil, respectively, and three kinds of solid particles (active carbon, active alumina and silica gel) were incorporated into each of the above mentioned slurries separately. The experimental results show that the active carbon particles could enhance the absorption rate of gaseous CO in the aqueous slurry, while in the cyclohexane slurry, active carbon particles indicated no the absorption enhancement effect. However, it was observed that the active alumina and silica gel particles could enhance the absorption rate of CO in the cyclohexane slurry. These phenomena indicate that the solid particles, which could enhance the gaseous CO absorption rate, should possess two properties simultaneously, i.e. they rejected the solvent and had higher adsorption capacity for the solute. The experimental results also show that, as for those solid particles which could enhance the gas absorption rate, the enhancement increased quickly with the increase of solid concentration in slurry at first, and then reached a constant value gradually. It was also found that the enhancement factor was related to the coverage fraction of solid particles on the gas-liquid interface, and due to the reduction of surface fraction with increasing stirred speed, the enhancement factor decreased.
